A character, living or non-living, could be the missing link that is needed to capture your audience’s attention and explain your message.
An animation and film story needs a character but the creation of characters can get overwhelming as you think about all the possibilities. Here are four things to consider first:
- Your character’s want and need – a want is what they desire and this drives their actions as they believe that this will give them happiness. A need is a lesson they are to learn to really achieve this happiness. For example, your character may want a perfect husband or wife but what they really need is to embrace people’s imperfections.
- Your character’s occupation – this determines what your character will do, the setting (where the character will be found), and sometimes even how your character talks.
- Your character’s strengths – this makes your character likable and helps them overcome their obstacles.
- Your character’s weakness – this is something they need to overcome for them to achieve their goal. It also makes them seem more ‘human’.
